La Grenouillère
Claude Monet
La Grenouillère, a popular bathing and boating spot on the Seine west of Paris, painted in the summer of 1869. Monet set up his easel here beside Renoir, and both painted the scene. People crowd the small round island in the centre, a floating restaurant stands on the right and empty rowing boats lie in the foreground, while light on the water is broken into broad horizontal strokes.
