Liberty Leading the People

Eugène Delacroix

Painted
1830
Collection
Musée du Louvre, Paris

Painted to commemorate the July Revolution of 1830, it shows Liberty striding over a barricade with the tricolour, leading citizens of every class: a bourgeois in a top hat, a boy with pistols, a worker. The towers of Notre-Dame rise through the smoke. Delacroix wrote that if he had not fought for his country, he would at least paint for it.
