The Arnolfini Portrait

Jan van Eyck

Painted
1434
Collection
National Gallery, London

A double portrait of a Bruges merchant and his wife and one of the earliest masterpieces of oil painting. A convex mirror on the back wall reflects the whole room and two visitors, and above it van Eyck wrote "Jan van Eyck was here, 1434". A single candle in the chandelier, the oranges by the window and the little dog at their feet show how far oil paint could go in describing the world.
