The Tower of Babel

Pieter Bruegel the Elder

Painted
1563
Collection
Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna

Bruegel imagined the biblical tower that provoked God's anger as a colossal spiral building modelled on the Colosseum. King Nimrod receives the bows of stonemasons at lower left while hundreds of tiny workers labour with cranes and scaffolds all over the structure. The closer you look, the more people you find, which makes it a perfect subject for a jigsaw.
