Wanderer above the Sea of Fog
Caspar David Friedrich
A man on a rocky summit, seen from behind, looks out over a mountain range drowned in fog. Because his face is hidden we take his place, and the solitude and awe before vast nature become our own. The defining image of German Romanticism, it has been quoted on countless book covers and posters.
