Whistler called this portrait of his mother an "arrangement in grey and black", declaring that harmony of colour and shape mattered more than who was shown. The black profile, grey wall and the rectangles of frame and curtain make a spare composition in which only the face and lace catch a soft light. It is often called the most famous American painting outside America.
