Ophelia
John Everett Millais
The mad Ophelia from Hamlet floats down a stream scattering flowers. Millais spent five months on the bank of the Hogsmill river painting every plant and blossom, then painted his model Elizabeth Siddal lying in a bath in London. The Pre-Raphaelite passion for exact natural detail meets one of Shakespeare's saddest scenes.
