Sunset Effect

Arkhip Kuindzhi

Painted

1900s

Collection

State Russian Museum, St Petersburg

Between dark walls of rock a snowy hollow opens out, and the last rays of the setting sun fall on treetops and snow in bright orange patches. Against the lilac sky and shadowed rocks, only the places the light touches seem to burn. After 1882 Kuindzhi almost stopped exhibiting and worked alone in his studio, studying effects of light.
