Moonlight slips between the trees of a forest clearing on a winter night and lies in bright patches on the snow. The rounded trees are reduced to dark masses, and within the cold blue-green only the lit snow stands out white. Kuindzhi was a painter of light: in 1880 he caused a sensation by showing a single painting, Moonlit Night on the Dnieper, alone in a darkened room.
