A sawmill under a low December sun, painted in 1914: blue sheds, a smoking chimney and stacks of timber beneath a sky churning with yellow. Sky and ground alike are built from short, heavy strokes that swirl in one rhythm, carrying even the horses, the sledges and the piles of planks. From about 1913 Almqvist painted with this vigorous brushwork and strong colour, and she is regarded as a pioneer of Expressionism in Sweden.
