Hylas and the Nymphs
John William Waterhouse
From Greek myth: the youth Hylas, come to fetch water, is seized and drawn in by the nymphs of the pool. Dark water strewn with lilies, seven nymphs with the same pale faces and auburn hair, and Hylas's hesitating gesture create a spell-bound mood. It is Waterhouse's most widely known painting.
