Del mito griego: el joven Hilas, que ha ido a buscar agua, es apresado y arrastrado por las ninfas del estanque. El agua oscura sembrada de nenúfares, siete ninfas con los mismos rostros pálidos y cabellos castaños, y el gesto vacilante de Hilas crean un ambiente de hechizo. Es el cuadro más conocido de Waterhouse.
