A naked woman sits beside two fully dressed men and looks calmly out at us. Rejected by the 1863 Salon and hung in the "Salon des Refusés", it caused a scandal because the nude was a modern woman rather than a goddess. Borrowing its arrangement from Raphael and Giorgione and translating it into contemporary life, it announced the beginning of modern painting.
