Bacchus and Ariadne

Titian

Painted
1520–23
Collection
National Gallery, London

Ariadne, abandoned on the shore by Theseus, is surprised by Bacchus leaping from his leopard-drawn chariot and falling in love at first sight; the constellation in the sky is the crown he gave her, turned to stars. Painted for the Duke of Ferrara's study, its sky glows with costly lapis lazuli blue.
