The Night Café
Vincent van Gogh
The late-night interior of a café near the station in Arles, where red walls, a green billiard table and yellow lamps clash. Van Gogh wrote that he had tried to express "the terrible passions of humanity" with red and green, painting a place where one might go mad or commit a crime. He stayed up three nights to paint it.
