A girl at a window reads a letter while her face is faintly mirrored in the glass. The wall behind her, long blank, gave up a painting of Cupid in a 2021 restoration, proving that Vermeer had been telling us from the start that this is a love letter. A dish of fruit and a curtain in front frame the scene like a stage.
