At the centre of the Sistine ceiling God stretches out his finger to give Adam life. The small gap between the two fingers creates all the tension of the picture, and the red mantle around God has been read as the outline of a human brain. It is the heart of the ceiling Michelangelo painted from a scaffold over four years.
