Breton women, having heard a sermon, see a vision of Jacob wrestling the angel. A tree trunk divides the real women from the vision, and the ground is painted flat vermilion, abandoning perspective and natural colour. It marks Gauguin's turn from Impressionism to Symbolism; he offered it to the village church, which refused it.
