The Ambassadors
Hans Holbein the Younger
A life-size double portrait of Jean de Dinteville, French ambassador to the court of Henry VIII (left), and his friend Georges de Selve, Bishop of Lavaur. The shelves hold a celestial globe, sundials, a terrestrial globe, a lute with a broken string and a hymn book, and the strange slanting shape on the floor becomes a skull when viewed from the side. A small crucifix is half hidden at the top left of the green curtain.
