Landscape with the Fall of Icarus
After Pieter Bruegel the Elder
A ploughman, a shepherd and an angler go about their work on a sunlit coast, while Icarus himself appears only as a pair of legs splashing into the sea beside the ship at lower right. Bruegel's original is lost, and this picture is thought to be an early copy of it; W. H. Auden wrote his poem Musée des Beaux Arts about it. Start with the coastline and the sailing ship, and leave Icarus's legs to find at the end.
