Sistine Madonna
Raphael
Green curtains draw back to reveal Mary stepping forward on the clouds with the Christ Child in her arms, flanked by the kneeling Saint Sixtus on the left and Saint Barbara on the right. Pope Julius II commissioned it for the church of San Sisto in Piacenza, and the name Sistine comes from Sixtus, not from the chapel in Rome. The two cherubs leaning on the ledge at the bottom have become more famous than the painting itself.
