The Calling of Saint Matthew
Caravaggio
Christ enters the room where the tax collector Matthew sits counting money with companions and stretches out a hand to call him. Painted for the Contarelli Chapel in San Luigi dei Francesi, Rome, it was Caravaggio's first major public commission; a shaft of light from the upper right follows Christ's gesture across the faces. Whether Matthew is the bearded man pointing at himself or the young man bent over the coins is still debated.
