The Jewish Bride

Rembrandt van Rijn

Painted
c. 1665
Collection
Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam

A tender double portrait, the woman in a red gown and the man in a sleeve of glowing gold, thought to show a married couple as the Old Testament Isaac and Rebecca. The title The Jewish Bride is a nineteenth-century nickname, and the man's sleeve is built up in thick, ridged paint that catches the light. In 1885 Van Gogh wrote that he would give ten years of his life to sit before it for a fortnight with only a crust of dry bread.
