Self-Portrait (1500)
Albrecht Dürer
Dürer painted himself in 1500, at the age of twenty-eight, looking straight out of the picture. The symmetrical, frontal pose and the curls falling to his shoulders recalled images of Christ, and the hand fingering his fur collar seems to put the artist's own hand on show. The Latin inscription at right says that he, Albrecht Dürer of Nuremberg, portrayed himself thus in his own colours at the age of twenty-eight.
