Three figures gaze out between white chalk cliffs to the sea on Rügen, the Baltic island. Friedrich travelled there in 1818 with Caroline, whom he had married that year, and his brother, and the woman in red, the crouching man and the standing man are often read as the three of them. The cliffs and overhanging branches form a heart-shaped frame around the calm grey-blue sea, where two small sailing boats drift.
