Reply of the Zaporozhian Cossacks
Ilya Repin
The story goes that in the 17th century the Zaporozhian Cossacks answered an Ottoman sultan's demand for surrender with a letter full of insults. The men crowd round a scribe at the table, each adding his line and roaring with laughter, from the bare-backed man in front to the faces under fur caps. Repin worked on the canvas for more than a decade.
