Sunflowers (Munich)
Vincent van Gogh
One of the sunflower paintings van Gogh made in Arles in August 1888 to decorate the room he was preparing for Gauguin. Twelve blooms, from fresh flowers to heads gone to seed, stand in a pale yellow vase signed Vincent, against a turquoise ground. The yellows look alike, but each flower has its own petal direction and centre colour, and those are the clues for matching pieces.
