The Potato Eaters
Vincent van Gogh
Five members of a peasant family share a supper of potatoes under an oil lamp, painted in April 1885 at Nuenen in the Netherlands. Van Gogh wrote to his brother Theo that he wanted to show these people had tilled the earth with the very hands they were putting into the dish. Among the earthy browns and greens only the lamp, the faces and the steaming plate catch the light.
