Self-Portrait (1889)
Vincent van Gogh
Painted in September 1889 at the asylum in Saint-Rémy, this is one of the last self-portraits van Gogh made. He sits half-turned in a bluish-grey suit against a background filled with rippling arabesques in the same cool tones, so that only his red hair and beard stand out. Start with the face and beard; the background goes together by following the grain of the swirls.
