The Sower
Vincent van Gogh
A peasant scattering seed over a ploughed field at sunset, painted at Arles in June 1888. Van Gogh revered Millet and returned again and again to his Sower, here recast in his own colours: a huge yellow sun and a band of ripe wheat above furrows built from short strokes of violet, blue and orange. The sun, the wheat and the figure come first; the broad field can then be sorted by the colours of its strokes.
