Portrait of Dr Gachet
Vincent van Gogh
Paul Gachet, the doctor and amateur painter who looked after van Gogh in his last months at Auvers-sur-Oise, painted in June 1890. Wearing a white cap, he leans his head on his hand at a red table, lost in melancholy, beside a sprig of foxglove, the plant from which a heart medicine was made. Van Gogh painted two versions of the composition; this is the second, now in the Musée d'Orsay.
