Irises (Vase)

Vincent van Gogh

Painted
1890
Collection
The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York

Painted in May 1890 at Saint-Rémy alongside Roses, this still life shows irises spilling in every direction from a white jug. Van Gogh set the violet flowers against a pink ground for a soft harmony, but his light-sensitive red pigments have faded, turning the flowers blue and the background almost white. Begin with the jug and the green band of the table, then work outward along the leaves.
