Winter Landscape with a Bird Trap
Pieter Bruegel the Elder
Bruegel's winter landscape of 1565: villagers skate and play on a frozen river below snow-covered houses and a church tower. At the right, a wooden board propped on a stick waits as a bird trap, with birds gathering around it and in the bare trees. The composition was so popular that his son Pieter Brueghel the Younger and his workshop made dozens of copies; the original is in the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium in Brussels.
