Ice-Skating in a Village

Hendrick Avercamp

Painted
c. 1610
Collection
Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam (on loan to the Mauritshuis, The Hague)

A frozen waterway in a Dutch village around 1610, lined with thatched houses under a grey sky. Skaters and kolf players crowd the ice, with a drawbridge and a mill in the distance, but everyday work goes on too: a woman washes laundry through a hole in the ice, wood is chopped on the bank, and at left people have fallen through the ice. The painting belongs to the Rijksmuseum and has hung in the Mauritshuis since 1924.
