Farmyard in Winter
George Henry Durrie
A New England farmyard in winter, painted in 1858 by the Connecticut artist George Henry Durrie. Cattle wander between the saltbox farmhouse, the barn and snow-capped haystacks, oxen haul a sledge and ducks gather at the pond, while two great bare trees reach into a grey, clearing sky. Durrie's winter farm scenes became widely known through Currier & Ives lithographs; this one now hangs in the White House.
