A Scene on the Ice

Hendrick Avercamp

Painted
c. 1625
Collection
National Gallery of Art, Washington

A frozen waterway around 1625 by Hendrick Avercamp, the Dutch painter who made the winter ice scene his speciality. Around a horse-drawn sleigh at the centre, townspeople in black cloaks, a man tying on his skates, a boy swinging a kolf club and running dogs are scattered across the ice, with the masts of ice-bound boats and a church tower in the distance. The pale sky fills half the panel, so start with the figures along the bottom.
