Ice Skating on a City Canal
Abraham Johannes Couwenberg
A city canal in winter, painted in the 1830s by Abraham Johannes Couwenberg, a Delft-born painter of panoramic summer and winter views. Skaters and people with sledges move across the ice, a tall windmill rises at right, and a cathedral stands in the distance under a heavy, broken sky. The clouds fill two-thirds of the canvas; follow their bands of light and shadow when assembling them.
