Winter Games on the Frozen River IJssel

Hendrick Avercamp

Painted
c. 1626
Collection
National Gallery of Art, Washington

Avercamp, known as 'the Mute of Kampen', drew this frozen stretch of the IJssel around 1626 in pen and ink with watercolour and gouache. In the foreground a man in grey lines up a shot at kolf, an early stick-and-ball game, while a gentleman in red points across the ice and onlookers sit and chat at right; beyond them lie a town with church towers and a boat locked in the ice.
