Central Park, Winter: The Skating Pond
Currier & Ives
A lithograph published in 1862 by the New York firm Currier & Ives after a drawing by Charles Parsons. Skaters crowd the frozen lake of Central Park, then only a few years old: gentlemen in top hats, ladies in hooped skirts and fur muffs, children, a woman pushed on a sled chair and a barking dog, with an arched bridge and a flag-topped building behind. The title lettering and the front row of figures are good places to start.
