Winter Landscape with Church

Caspar David Friedrich

Painted

c. 1811

Collection

National Gallery, London

A man has cast aside his crutches and leans against a rock in the snow, praying before a crucifix sheltered by fir trees, while a Gothic church rises out of the mist behind. The abandoned crutches lie in the snow at lower right. The picture seems to be a companion to a painting of the same title in Schwerin, where a man on crutches stands among dead oaks: despair there, hope through faith here.
