A large winter landscape commissioned by King Frederik VI of Denmark for Christiansborg Palace. In the foreground a dolmen, partly wrecked by grave robbers, lies beneath ancient oaks, linking present and past, while smoke rises from a thatched farmhouse across the field and a hunter crosses with his dog. Dahl, a Norwegian living in Dresden, worked from studies he had made on the spot in 1816.
