Snow in the Engadine
Ferdinand Hodler
The Engadine, a high valley in the eastern Swiss Alps, painted in 1907. A band of snowy flat ground runs across the bottom, and the mountain ridges on either side slope down towards the centre, facing each other like mirror images beneath a wide, pale sky. This symmetry and repetition of forms is what Hodler called parallelism; he painted the same view in more than one version.
