A Travelling Beggar Family on Christmas Eve
Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller
Painted around 1834 by the Austrian Biedermeier painter, the picture shows a poor peasant household sharing what it has with a family of wandering beggars on Christmas Eve. The farmer’s wife holds out a bowl to the beggar mother with a small child in her arms, while a seated old man dangles something for the children playing on the floor. Light from the window at the back picks out faces and the folds of clothing in crisp detail.
