Christmas Gift-Giving
Nikolaus Hoffmann
Christmas presents being handed out in a middle-class parlour in the 1760s, one of the earliest known paintings of a decorated Christmas tree. A crowned woman in a white dress with a red sash, accompanied by the masked, hunched figure of Knecht Ruprecht, points to the children, and behind a table of dolls, toys and fruit stands a large pine branch hung with candles and an angel. At right a servant comforts a crying child.
