Private collection

A winter village scene 150 centimetres wide, painted in 1882 by the German painter Friedrich Kallmorgen: at dusk, villagers walk home along a snowy road carrying fir branches and baskets. Red firelight spills from a thatched cottage, a cart, a dog by the gateposts and a white birch line the road, and a pink sunset lies along the horizon. Kallmorgen was one of the founders of the artists' colony at Grötzingen near Karlsruhe.
