Queen Victoria's Christmas Tree
William Corden
Queen Victoria's Christmas tree and presents at Windsor Castle in 1850, in an oil copy by William Corden of a watercolour by James Roberts. A candlelit tree stands on a white-draped table in a room of red walls and gilded mouldings, while framed paintings, apparently among the gifts, rest on easels and tables around it. The royal family's German-style tree helped make the custom popular in British homes in these years.
