Christmas Tree
Marianne von Werefkin
Painted in tempera and watercolour on paper in 1911 by the Russian-born Expressionist Marianne von Werefkin, the scene is a room in the governor's palace at Kaunas (Kovno) in Lithuania. Children in white dance hand in hand round a deep blue-green tree, a woman in dark blue bends to guide them, and the floor glows golden orange. Werefkin had stayed there from December 1909 to spring 1910 with her brother Peter, then governor of Kaunas.
