Bridge over a Pond of Water Lilies

Claude Monet

Painted
1899
Collection
The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York

The Japanese bridge Monet built in his garden at Giverny and the lily pond beneath it. He painted the bridge more than a dozen times in the summer of 1899; here willows and lilies fill the canvas so completely that no sky is visible. It is the starting point of the water-lily series that would occupy the next thirty years.
