A steam locomotive rushes toward us across Maidenhead Bridge on the Thames through rain and mist. Only the bridge and the train keep their shape; the rest dissolves into a whirl of light and wet, and a tiny hare races the engine on the track ahead. It is considered the first painting to capture the speed of the industrial age.
