Mont Sainte-Victoire Seen from the Bibémus Quarry

Paul Cézanne

Painted
c. 1897
Collection
Baltimore Museum of Art

One of the dozens of views Cézanne painted of the mountain near his native Aix-en-Provence, this time seen over the orange rocks of an abandoned quarry. Rocks, trees and mountain are built up in planes of colour that seem to press forward from the canvas, and this solid structure became a starting point for Cubism.
